Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Treks

After early morning breakfast at the hotel, depart to the Virunga National Park for trekking the Mountain Gorillas. All treks are led by park rangers and usually depart from Bukima patrol post. Treks usually require 1-2 hours of hiking in each direction, depending where the mountain gorillas spent the previous night and the difficulty of the terrain. You will pass one hour with the gorillas and you’ll enjoy this adventure for a life time memory.

After trekking the Gorillas, (if you are not tired) Goma city tour. It is now an occasion to visit many attractive sites such as local markets, museum, the lava that burnt the town in 2002, city monuments, lake Kivu, Goma harbour, hotels and restaurants, all the places that make Goma such a fascinating city to explore. It is also an occasion to interact with locals and learn about their history, their life. At the end of the tour, you’ll surely enjoy the experience and be amazed by the capacity of resilience of the locals. During the tour we will stop for lunch.

Day 3: Nyiragongo Volcano hiking

After breakfast at the hotel, since there is no food service on Nyiragongo, it’s time to do some shopping before we depart to Kibati patrol post where treks to the summit of Nyiragongo volcano begin. Park rangers lead all treks and porters (unaffiliated with the park) are available for hire at Kibati ranger station. The time required to reach the summit depends on the average fitness of each group, but typically takes 4 – 6 hours. It is possible for fitter people to climb up and descend in one day, but the vast majority chooses to overnight in the basic accommodations available at the top (included in the permit fee) because the best time to view the lava lake is at night. Sunset at the summit of Nyiragongo. Enjoy watching, in the night, the world’s largest lava lake. Dinner and overnight at the summit of Nyiragongo Volcano in the shelter.

Trekkers are strongly advised to bring full rain and cold weather gear (moisture-wicking base layer, sweater or fleece, jacket, rain resistant pants, long underwear, warm socks, hat, and a 0°C/32° – rated sleeping bag), good walking shoes, sun cream, etc.
