The conservancy, which is home to many animals, spans over 35,000 acres of prime grassland, riverine forests and acacia woodlands and is inhabited by a number of different Lion Prides, Cheetahs and a family of Leopards.

Safari at Olare Mara

It's a truly unique experience to be out in an open air Land Cruiser traveling around a conservancy while so many animals are roaming free. You are assured to see a lot on safari, with your journey having the possibility of encountering Antelope, Buffalo, Leopards, Hippos, Elephants and a favorite for many the Warthog. With no windows, or obstructions, you can also get a selfie with that roaring Lion. What's great about safari at the Olare Mara Kempinski is since it is located in Olare Motorogi conservancy the safaris and vehicles are limited. That means it's an exclusive and personal experience, no lines of cars. For an extra layer of adventure try one of the night safaris. Hear the animal sounds all around and see through the vast darkness with the help of an infrared spotlight. It's an exhilarating experience especially when you can watch a pride of lions playing only feet from you.

Guides from Local Communities

Many of our guides are from local villages and this provides an important link between the community and the conservation process. They are not just wildlife specialists – they are also the ambassadors of the conservancy.

Through their participation, they gain first-hand understanding of how conservation works and are therefore better able to explain its virtues to their own community as well as our guests. The three-way dialogue between our guides, their community and our management team helps to establish a bond of trust between the stakeholders which will ensure the success of the conservation project.

Born on the plains of the Masai Mara, they have an innate connection with nature from birth, they learn quickly and are eager to reach the pinnacle by which the industry judges them – the gold-level guiding qualification. However, they fully recognise that the invaluable work they do every day for conservation is the only standard by which future generations will judge them.

Conservancy

The picture of a solitary open 4x4 vehicle close to a lion and its prey, is rare to see in the Masai Mara nowadays. An intimate encounter similar to that is perhaps only possible on a wildlife conservancy like Olare Motorogi which is still part of the vast Mara/Serengeti eco-system but is private and accessible to only a handful of safari guests.

A few years ago the grasslands here were overrun by cattle, driving the wildlife away from these vital dispersal areas, but thanks to the vision and groundbreaking efforts of conservationists Jake Grieves- Cook and Samuel Warren, a great amount of wildlife has returned and is thriving once again.

The Masai communities who own the land are at the heart of the conservation effort.

For a regular fee paid to them by the 5 partnering safari camps permitted to operate inside the 35,000- acre conservancy, the Masai have agreed to limit cattle grazing in the area.

Today, as a result, our privileged guests are able to enjoy prolific wildlife sightings of lions, leopards, cheetah and even wild dogs off-road, close-up, without the crowds, day and night, with the additional benefit of being able to go on guided walks with trained Masai naturalists.
