Hluhluwe River Lodge

Situated on the western shore of Lake St Lucia and adjoining False Bay Game Reserve with the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park lies Hluhluwe River Lodge. The lodge commands a spectacular view of the Hluhluwe River floodplain and False Bay.
Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park offers excellent game viewing and a chance to see the "Big Five" from open landrover's. This world famous park is approximately 30 minutes from the lodge. The lodge has two open game viewing vehicles and morning drives can be booked prior to arrival or once at the lodge.
Twelve thatched chalets are dotted around a magnificent indigenous garden each with its own viewing deck. There are 8 two-bed chalets, 2 four bed family chalets with private shower and toilet facilities. In addition there are 2 honeymoon chalets with shower and Victorian style baths. All chalets have modern air-conditioners and mosquito nets. There is a central main lodge facility with separate lounge, dining room and pub facility and an outside boma where meals are served under the African stars. There is a network of well lit paths connecting the rooms to the main lodge and there is a secluded swimming pool in the garden.
Activities: Canoe Trail
The Hluhluwe river is a flat water environment consisting of several kilometres of meandering river interspersed with giant Fig trees, reed beds and riverine forest. The river is utilised by local fishermen for subsistence fishing and is also home to Crocodiles, Hippopotamus and a myriad of birdlife. Local river guides who have an intimate knowledge of the river accompany small groups on half-day trips on the river. The canoes are stable and suitable for carrying photographic equipment and binoculars. A variety of birdlife, beautiful waterscapes and chance interactions with local fisherman combined with a relaxed picnic under one of the giant Fig trees is a unique way to spend a day exploring the great outdoors.
Activities: Horse Trail
The lodge has a string of 15 well-schooled safari horses and experienced trail guides to accompany guests on either a scenic bush trail or a more specialised safari ride. The rides are unique as one has a chance to view game from horseback and offers you a surreal riding experience On a bush trail one might encounter Zebra, Wildebeest, Nyala and small antelope. The Safari ride affords a unique opportunity to encounter some of the peaceful giants - White Rhino and Giraffe. This ride is suitable only for experienced riders as one rides in an area where larger game occurrs (ie rhino/buffalo). The horse trails are approximately an hour of riding in the saddle with a rest stop at a suitable point.
